abstract = "This paper evaluates a geobotany enhancement technique applied to
multispectral VNIR and SWIR data from ASTER imagery. The aim is to
map the geology of a virtually inaccessible area, covered by
tropical rainforest, and for which no airborne geophysical data
are available. The technique is based on the premise that the
vegetation characteristics and distribution are influenced by the
underlying bedrock, and its spectral response can reveal the
lithologic arrangement. The technique is straightforward and
comprises band ratios using a fixed near infrared band on the
numerator and individual visible and shortwave infrared bands on
the denominator. These band ratios were subsequently submitted to
principal component analysis (PCA) in order to segregate noise, to
decorrelate possible redundant information and to concentrate the
information of interest into some specific principal components.
The high frequency information produced was smoothed by low pass
filtering. Statistical analysis of PCA results and visual check of
the filtered components individually (and in false colour
composites) allowed the selection of the best RGB triplets. These
were sharpened by the first principal component of the original
VNIR ASTER bands through an IHS transform, in order to add
albedo/texture information - lost through band rationing - back to
the imagery. The interpretation of the products shows a plausible
coherence with field observations and existing small-scale maps,
demonstrating that the proposed processing strategy can provide
useful geologic information in inaccessible vegetated areas.",
